The laboratory of Anatomy/Pathology was created in 1911 by the Baron Edmond de Rothschild who always wanted a scientific department in his hospital. Doctor Jacques Mawas was nominated director in 1911, a position he held continuously except for the difficult war years of 1914 to 1918 and 1939 to 1946.

The documents are there that show that the laboratory always continued to function : histological sections, writings and publications as well as photographs.

Doctor Jacques Mawas remained at the laboratory until his death in January 1976.
He was succeeded by Doctor P. Dhermy and Doctor M. Sterkers until the final closure of the laboratory in 2001.

This collection is the result of the encounter of two exceptional people :

Jacques Mawas, a brilliant scientist, and A. Bessin an exceptional designer in this particular discipline. The two men worked together in harmony and left us this extraordinarily rich work for the instruction of our generation and future ones. In his work Doctor Mawas never separated research and clinical work. As a result, the drawings of Bio microscopy and of the fundus of the eye were drawn directly from a patient under examination. In this way Mademoiselle Dongé was able to reproduce with exactitude the diseases that Jacques Mawas indicated.
